Hope Beyond Measure
When others give up, we step in. Mid October found us picking up a little stray dog that seemed beyond help. She was at best, hours away from death. Rushing her to the vet, we knew the odds were against her and almost resigned ourselves to the idea that she had no hope for recovery, weighing in at only 14 pounds, labored breathing, white gums, and no strength. Days of treatment, emergency surgery for pyometra, and a blood transfusion found her steadily slipping away. Her red blood cells were fading and now were in the single digits while the white blood count soared to an unbelievable count of 169,000.
We made the decision to move her to the Medical Center at Louisiana State University and although she was immediately hospitalized, extensive testing began to discover the cause of her condition. Outwardly, it appeared she would need to be euthanized but we could not euthanize her without finding the cause. Was this some treatable condition or was there simply no hope of recovery? As always, we held onto hope, knowing that she, like so many other dogs, deserved a chance. What joy flooded our heart when we found she was treatable and the cause of her condition had been caused by ingesting ticks. iCarley had injested an infected tick Gulf Coast Tick (or ticks) and was suffering from Hepatozoonosis. iCarley had both kinds of this disease along with Anaplasmosis, Babesosis and Rickettsia and is a high heartworm positive. While treatable, her condition will remain with her for the rest of her life and she will need to remain on medication and under the care of internal medicine specialists.
Who knew ticks could be so deadly? Reports tell us that Heppatozoonosis without treatment is fatal within a year. We are convinced she was on day 364.

Our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly in the actions of our initiatives. From the moment we started our work in 2000, we understood that by working together we could overcome our challenges much more efficiently, and that is why we ultimately decided to launch Sweetpups Nation Rescue and Sanctuary. We strive to make a positive change in all of our pursuits.
All our dogs are located in Texas, with most housed at the Rescue/Sanctuary until homes are located. All our pets are spayed, neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed, heartworm tested/treated and on prevention. We provide transport to point on the East Coast and travel as far north as Bangor, Maine as weather permits. Our work cannot successfully continue without homes. The dogs normally move quickly as it seems a lot of folks want their very own "Sweetpups", therefore, if you see one you are interested in, we encourage you to pursue adoption quickly.
Lady Blu
This absolutely stunning little lady is looking for a place to rest her head. Found in a local pound with infected skin and missing hair, heartworm positive and totally broken spirited, we welcomed her to Sweetpups.
Lady Blu has been nothing but a true lady since arriving, gets along well with other dogs, loves people and doesn't seem to mind the cats.
Lady Blu is now through with all her vetting that included heartworm treatment and is asking anyone that would like to offer her a home to complete the application.
4 years old, short and stocky and weighs in close to 45 pounds. She would be easily classified by many as a "pocket pittie" but we simply call her amazing!
Alligator Bait Puppies - Adopted
Trace and Tolkien are the only two pups left from the Gator Bait Pups as the rest have been adopted. Yes, they truly were being used as such in a local canal but thanks to a fisherman and Mr. Sweetpups, all were brought to safety. They are fiercely loyal and work to protect their "flock" which is comprised of their chosen people. Not aggressive but protective in nature, as is their breed. Very playful and can be somewhat rambunctious but the love they bring, along with their stunning beauty, makes up for that!

Ever curious about their surroundings, they check out everything that is new. That is a trait of the breed. They use those noses to examine everything just to make certain it is acceptable and not a danger to their "flock". We have learned just to hold new items (and new dogs) still untill the Pyrenese inspection has been successfully completed.

And yes, we rescue! Many of our dogs are found after they have been abandoned, some are off death row, some are owner surrenders. While our initial goal is to keep pets in homes, given the large number of unwanted pets in our area, it is just not possible all the time. We house a minimum of 100 dogs on the Sweetpups property, which changes substantially with every natural disaster in the Gulf. Every dog receives the utmost care, is thoroughly vetted, and is assessed as to the home needed before being offered to adopters.
Sanctuary
One Step at a Time
Sometimes an animal comes to us with special needs that greatly diminish its chance of successful adoption, whether long-term medical, emotional, behavioral, or simply age. These dogs may enter our Sanctuary Program to live out the remainder of their days, however long that may be, in Sweetpups style. We have worked very hard to provide a life of comfort for these dogs that deserve to be happy and loved, but for some reason may not be a fit in a typical adoptive family.
Spay Program
Helping The Community
ONE female dog and her offspring can produce over 67,000 puppies in a 6-year time frame. Realizing that we will never be able to rescue all the puppies in need, we can greatly reduce that number by working with the owners. We began the Spay Program to work with the underserved community, providing low to no cost spays, decreasing the number of litters. We believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and invite you to donate to this cause!
Transport
Reinforcing our Commitment
We saw the need to add a transport service to Sweetpups and make monthly trips to northern locations to move dogs into new homes. Some dogs will go to our partner rescues in other states but many go directly into approved homes. The dogs travel in style in "Sapphire", the transport van, and are tended around the clock until they arrive at their new destination. We invite other rescues to take advantage of our services when possible. Our cost to transport is roughly $100 per dog, made possible through your donations. Such a small price to give a dog a new life!
